angra do heroismo, capital de isla terceira
sers. The most typical dish comes from this area, the Furnas
stew, a culinary speciality that is prepared by introducing
pots with vegetables, legumes and a variety of meats into
holes dug in the hot earth. Many cooks have pots in this area
of Furnas for the preparation of stews that are later served
in their restaurants.
In Fogo, you should not miss a visit to the natural pools of
hot thermal waters in the Caldeira Velha Natural Park. It
is a film like setting that brings you back to prehistoric times
with its large trees full of lichens, gigantic ferns and volcanic
gases flowing from the bowels of the island.
Another magical place in São Miguel is the Boca do Inferno
route. A path that enters into an amazing setting of natu- avistamientos de delfines | dolphin watching
re that exhibits all the shades of green. The route crosses
a lush forest that surrounds the small Canario lagoon and molino de felix, ponta delgada
ends at the Boca do Inferno viewpoint, with a sight of the
Sete Cidades caldera.
PICO AND TERCEIRA
The second island gets its name from the Pico volcano, the
highest peak in Portugal. It treasures an exuberant vegeta-
tion, lakes, numerous fruit trees and, especially, large ex-
tensions of vineyards in lava rock lands declared a World
Heritage Site by Unesco. Its white wines are highly appre-
ciated.
Another World Heritage Site awaits in Terceira: Angra do
Heroismo. It is the historic capital of the archipelago, foun-
ded in 1534. Here we can find the fortifications of São Se-
bastião and São João Baptista, and churches such as that of
Mercy or that of Santísimo Salvador da Sé, together with pa-
laces such as the Capitaes Generais and that of Bettencourt.
We certainly can’t discover all the attractions of this ar-
chipelago in a single trip and inevitably we leave behind
many spots to discover. One thing is sure, these islands
are the perfect place to unwind and enjoy amidst an uns-
poiled nature.
