Did you know that this port has installed marine biodiversity regeneration systems?

Marina Greenwich, in collaboration with Ocean Ecostructures, has installed systems in some submerged areas that enable the regeneration of marine biodiversity. In this way, using innovative technology, this system makes it possible to revitalise and recycle damaged marine infrastructure and environments, regenerating life and strengthening the fight against climate change by restoring marine biodiversity.

What is ocean ecostructures?

Ocean Ecostructures develops marine regeneration technology that provides solutions to offset the negative effects of marine infrastructure by implementing biodiversity regeneration systems using state-of-the-art scientific techniques.

Did you know that this port has installed marine biodiversity regeneration systems?

At Marina Greenwich, 6 LBU (Life Boosting Unit) structures have been installed, which are complete, biomimetic, multi-layered, calcium carbonate (like coral) ecosystems that allow different species to attach and develop naturally. These ecosystems allow for a very significant increase in the diversity of marine fauna and flora. As a curiosity, each LBU generates daily O2 for 9.21 people.

Where they are located

The structures are distributed in different areas of the port area, previously analysed and selected in collaboration with Ocean Ecostructures for optimal development and regeneration of marine biodiversity in the waters of the port.

On this map you can identify where they are located.

Do you want to see any of these structures?

To achieve their purpose, these structures are installed approximately two metres below sea level. The structures most visible to visitors to Marina Greenwich are located at mooring No. 342, at the end of pontoon No. 2 and at mooring No. E002. If you look out carefully at the edge of the pier, you will be able to make them out.

When will the results be seen?

The results of regeneration and reforestation of marine flora and fauna depend on the ecosystem in which these structures have been installed. In most cases, a visible result can be seen after 14 weeks. At Marina Greenwich, the LBU structures were installed on 18 July 2023.
