HOW DO YOU DESIGN A VERTICAL GARDEN?
central park, sydney. patrick blanc
The vegetation grows on a metal frame anchored to the wall
which has an air chamber to prevent the roots from enter-
ing into it. An automatic irrigation system and a hydropon-
ic system are also installed to provide the plants with the
necessary nutrients preventing that the plants extend their
roots around the building.
Actually, the idea of the vertical garden is not new. In
1938, the professor of Landscape Architecture at the
University of Illinois, Stanley White Hart, was already
talking about this concept and developed some proto-
types in the backyard of his house. Nevertheless, it was
not until 1980 when the French botanist Patrick Blanc
invented a system of plant walls as we know them now.
His first green wall was created in 1988 in the City of
Sciences and Industry in Paris.
